”Charlie Wilson’s War” fortæller den sande, men hemmelige og helt usandsynlige historie om det trekløver, der besejrede Den Røde Hær og bragte Sovjetunionen til fald.

I december 1979 besætter Sovjetunionen nabolandet Afghanistan. Dele af befolkningen griber dog straks til våben og kæmper mod besættelsesmagten. Men hvad kan en håndfuld uuddannede, barfodede krigere med rifler fra forrige verdenskrig dog udrette mod den teknologisk overlegne Røde Hær?

Af alle mennesker fatter et amerikansk kongresmedlem med sans for livets goder – både på flaske og af det andet køn – sympati for mujahedinernes modstandskamp. Og Charlie Wilson har noget at have sin sympati i, for han kan bevilge penge til CIA’s hemmelige operationer til støtte for frihedskæmperne. Blandt Charlies usandsynlige hjælpere i denne skjulte krig finder man en brysk CIA-agent og en smuk society-frue fra Houston, som hver især hjælper ham med at smede en alliance, der omfatter både Israel, Pakistan, Saudi Arabien og Kina. Og pludselig udskiftes mujahedinernes rifler med Stinger-missiler.

Tom Hanks skal spille hovedrollen i Universals nye film “Charlie Wilsons War“. filmen er basereet på et Adam Sorkin manuskript og handler om en uærlig kongres politiker fra Texas, fortæller Variety. Det lader nu også til at Julia Roberts overvejer en rolle i filmen som vil blive hendes første siden Ocean´s Twelve i 2004.

Filmen bliver produceret af Hanks og Gary Goetzman igennem deres Playtone og er Hanks næste projektet, efter at han har afsluttet sit samarbejde med Ron Howard og Sony i filmen The Da Vinci Code.
Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead, Road to Perdition, Sweeney Todd) var på et tidspunkt udset som instruktør.

In the early 1980s, Charlie Wilson is a womanizing US congressional representative from Texas who seemed to be in the minor leagues, except for the fact that he is a member of two major foreign policy and covert-ops committees. However, prodded by his major conservative supporter, Joanne Herring, Wilson learns about the plight of the people are suffering in the brutal Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. With the help of the maverick CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, Wilson dedicates his canny political efforts to supply the Afghan mujahideen with the weapons and support to defeat the Soviet Union. However, Charlie Wilson eventually learns that while military victory can had, there are other consequences and prices to that fight that are ignored to everyone’s sorrow.

I denne efterfølger til mega hittet “National Treasure” kommer skattejægeren Ben Gates endnu en gang ud på et hæsblæsende action-eventyr som tager ham verden rundt for at finde uopdaget historie og opdrive skjulte skatte.

Da en forsvunden side fra John Wilkes Booth dagbog dukker op, bliver Bens tip-oldefar pludselig impliceret som hovedmistænkt i attentatet på Abraham Lincon. Opsat på at bevise sine forfædres uskyld følger Ben en kæde af internationale spor som fører ham fra Paris til London og tilbage til Amerika igen. Denne rejse fører ikke blot Ben og hans hold til overraskende afsløringer, men den fører dem også på sporet af en af verdens mest velbevarede hemmeligheder.

Treasure hunter Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) embarks on a new adventure in director Jon Turtletaub’s sequel to NATIONAL TREASURE. Ben and his father, Patrick (Jon Voight), take great pride in their ancestors and their family’s devotion to the United States. When Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) produces a page from the diary of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth allegedly linking Ben’s great-great grandfather to the plot, Ben and Patrick set out on a path to clear their family’s name. Ben also believes that the diary page contains hints to the whereabouts of a treasure map leading to an ancient city made of gold, and soon the hunt is on. Tech expert Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and Ben’s now ex-girlfriend Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) join the Gates in their quest, which takes them from Washington, DC, to Paris, London and the Black Hills of South Dakota. It’s true that the storyline and the actions of Gates and his team–which include breaking into the Queen’s study at Buckingham Palace, sneaking into the Oval Office, and kidnapping the President of the United States–are completely unbelievable. But with a storyline built on true, interesting trivia and great locations, this film is an amusing, family-friendly romp. Cage has some great moments as Gates– loyal, patriotic, fair to a fault, and very funny as he goads on Buckingham Palace security. Harris plays Wilkinson with just the right air of mystery and menace: is he after fortune, or does he just want to leave his own mark in history? Helen Mirren fits the bill as Ben’s mother and Patrick’s estranged ex-wife, Emily, a scholar and historian in her own right.
